How I Started Stripping at 19

‘Honey' Newark, NJ--     I want to make something very clear!!!! It was my choice to become an entertainer. My decision had nothing to do with the way I was raised, it wasn't something to do because it was cool to do at the time-- Like most of these new little bitches. I got turned on to dancing and I'm going to tell you how..... 

  

 Lets take it back to the year 2013. 

     

  I graduated at the top of my class in high school, got into the college I’ve always wanted to attend (Morgan State University), only to get there  and be broke and on my own. Finding a job proved to be harder than expected, especially, in a new state, when you are fresh out of high school with little experience aside from working retail at Jersey gardens mall. My mother always  made it happen for her kids but she wasn't rich and still had two other children to take care of after I left for school, so I was literally all on my own. I could not afford to stay at Morgan, even with 7 scholarships. I left after one semester , enrolled at Kean and moved back in with my mom. This was so devastating to me! I loved everything about Morgan state, I had friends, and a few boys to play with but I knew it was the best thing I could do to take the weight off my mother. 

    When I moved back home to Jersey, I took the first job I could get  at the movie theater making 8.50 an hour. I managed to work my school schedule around my shitty hours. I wasn't making enough to live on my own but It was at least going to get me by until I found something better, maybe  pay for a book and my phone bill. I was home for about a month before my cousin Tip birthday rolled around, my other  cousin Katt was throwing  her  a tattoo stripper party. I was excited to go because I had never been to a party with strippers before.  We get to the party and it's a bunch of niggas everywhere , some getting tatted, but it's NO strippers in sight.  

    I ask my cousin Katt, "Yo where the bitches at? Its supposed to be some ass shaking going on in here." I was trying to a little lap dance on my $20 budget.  

"I know cuddy, I need a really big favor cause these bitches on some bullshit and now they not even coming.” Katt replied, visibly pissed. 

 

"So wussup cuddy? What you need me to do?" I ask, still oblivious as to how I could help. I didn't know any strippers that I could call.  

"I need you to dance for these niggas and get this money! I got outfits for you to wear and everything, you gon' be good!" She noticed my facial expression and continued," Please cuddy, I need somebody to entertain and keep these niggas in here because they have money and my name on the line! Trust me. I gotchu." 

Now, I've never been shy, but at nineteen I was a little body conscious... Looking back on it I'd kill to have that body again, but I just wasn't confident enough to consider being a stripper at that time. Actually, the thought had never crossed my mind.  

"Bitch what?! I'm skinny iscell I can't dance for these niggas!"  

   Katt just looked at me and started laughing. I kinda figured it was because she was way smaller than me and had been a stripper for a while already. "Girl bye, look at me! You can do this girl, you going to be dancing for your cousin, we all here girl you're good.” 

 

I was a little hesitant, but she did have a point.  “Bitch what Imma wear?!”  

    Katt stuffed  a yellow and orange outfit that had a hood on it (ewk) into my hand and told me to go get dressed. While I was getting ready, another friend of my cousin arrived and she was ultimately convinced that  she was going to be  dancing too. Having another person to dance with made me more comfortable, but I was still obviously very  nervous. My cousin brought us a few shots and when I was loose enough to be friendly, that’s when we got the night started. 

    This happened over 7 years ago so I don’t remember exactly how my first night as a stripper went, between the strobe lights and Hennessey, it was all a blur. I do remember this party was on a Friday and I had just gotten paid earlier that day. My two-week paycheck for 40 hours of work was only $222.48. *Yes, I remember it down to the MotherFuckin Decimal! *After I finished dancing at Katt's party for 3 hours I left with over 300.00 after I split the money with the other girl, so we made a little over 600. Truth be told, I don't know wtf I was doing and probably spent the majority of the time dancing with my head down and my back towards my audience. I was drunk, I remember that made it better, but I know it wasn't that bad. I made up my mind that night I was never going back to the movie theater, called and quit my job the very next day.  

    Originally, I started off just doing private parties with my older cousin Katt. At this time, I'm  trying to keep my profile very low because I didn't even tell my mother that I quit my job, and I damn sure didn’t want to tell her that I was a stripper! I kept it a secret for months. When she started to question the increase in my money and the hours I'm walking up in her house, I told her I was a bartender. In reality, I'm linking up with my cousin doing private parties every weekend. We would get paid a $150-250 booking plus tips to dance for a 2-3 hours, the easiest money I've ever made! I was bringing in between $500- 800 per party, but they weren't coming consistent enough. I quit my damn job, I need to get money every day, not just on the weekends, fuck that! I met a stripper named Thickness, while doing a private party at a barber shop in 2013;she took me to my first strip club (which I won't name) but it was a done deal after that!

    This is a little different from the previous stories I've written, because it's more personal; It is my story and I’ll be telling the stories about other girls and how they started in this lifestyle, but this one is MINE.  Yes, I take off my clothes for money, but I do so in a tasteful way (So I thought). I tried very hard not to be like 'the rest of them'. For me, dancing was a way to go to school, get an education and pay my bills so that I can be fully independent. I did that and continue to do that! I was very proud to be the stripper that was more like Diamond, as opposed to Ronnie, I ran into a few of those. It wasn't until I was almost out of college that I realized none of that shit even matters. It does not matter that I graduated at the top of my class, got a bachelor's degree, and elevated my entire life. People would rather stare at you with a judgmental lens and try to point out your ’sin' or what they consider a ‘flaw’ because it detracts from how shitty their life is. I won’t even mention how many times I've been introduced as, "My stripper friend, Honey or This Honey, she a stripper!" No Bitch, I’m just Honey ! Over time, I’ve grown to be ok with that introduction; I wear my stripes proudly, and I know i'm also so much more than that! 

    What I'm NOT okay with, is the disgusting ideologies and myths people form about strippers. Y’all seem to have it all figured out in terms of what we do, who we are and how we move like every stripper is the same. The most hilarious part is, half of these square ass , bad body built ass bitches with the most to say, never even stepped foot in a strip club! Imma put it to you like this-- If you a hoe, you're a hoe as a teacher, a librarian, cooperate executive, or the bitch flipping burgers at McDonalds; cause a hoe gonna be a hoe, regardless of her occupation! I’ve met more hoes in college than I ever met in the strip club & That’s a FACT! Most dancers, that I personally know, are so focused on taking care of their families and getting money, that sex is the last thing on the agenda! You’d be surprised how many dancers are lesbians, that wouldn’t fuck you even if you paid em', but yeah …. I tend let people think what they want, cause I know WTF I be doing!
